Why it’s time to see water differently

Wavin’s main mission centres on creating liveable, loveable cities –

and with flooding becoming more intense and destructive than ever before, the situation is at breaking point. The urban climate resilience team at Wavin is leading the conversation on the UK’s outdated water infrastructure, the damage it’s doing to our cities, and why we need a paradigm shift.

Putting this conversation firmly into the spotlight was the goal for Wavin’s See Water Differently in April 2024. The event brought top industry experts to the Sky Garden, one of London’s most iconic venues, along with Good Morning Britain’s Laura Tobin as host. Our job was to make their voices heard by as many people as possible.

Making it matter

Our media relations experts leveraged the power of the Sky Garden, a venue looking out over London, a city born out of water, to engage both national and trade media.

We know these journalists are busy, working to tight deadlines with crowded inboxes. We needed to cut through the noise with an invitation that was guaranteed to catch their attention, taking a truly bespoke approach to media relations. This meant offering a bigger story than just a company event, this roundtable featured a variety of perspectives from key players in the water sector, all tied together by the opportunity to really see water differently and do so in a spectacular setting. This was the focus for the team reaching out to media, piquing curiosity and starting conversations, rather than just selling the story.

Tangerine’s Newsroom team of former journalists and media relations experts is always plugged into the media narrative, and water hasn’t strayed far from the headlines over the past few years. As a result, we were able to demonstrate how the event would build on the stories journalists are telling and provide some answers, rather than just more questions.

Media titles that attended the event included: BBC News, The Times, Metro, New Civil Engineer and Construction Europe.

The Results

The result was a sell-out. The event lived up to its billing, with an insightful discussion on the issues caused by our out-of-date infrastructure combined with more common extreme rainfall events caused by climate change.

Our panel sounded the alarm, but also uncovered the prospect of a collaborative solution to urban water management and climate resilience. Tangerine’s comprehensive media relations strategy ensured that this call to action was heard loud and clear by Wavin’s target media and audience.

Coverage from the event continues to raise Wavin’s profile as a thought leader, in titles like edie, Water Magazine and New Civil Engineer, helping build its credibility around a key issue.
