Specsavers go to infinity and beyond to help

Everyone makes the occasional mistake at work but not everyone has their mistake witnessed by the entire world – which was the unfortunate case for two NASA astronauts in November!

During a spacewalk to carry out some scheduled maintenance on the International Space Station, the two astronauts lost sight of their tool bag, subsequently allowing it to float off into space! Worth $100,000, this mishap was certainly a bad day at the office.

The news broke in the
am and by lunchtime.

We had had planned and executed the launch of a hydrogen filled stratospheric balloon, carrying a pair of Specsavers frames all the way into space to help NASA find their missing tool bag.

Yes, you read that right…SPACE!

The team took the mere idea and turned it into a ‘specstraterrestrial’ event in just four hours, taking off from Sheffield, the glasses searched for the lost tool bag 2550 miles beyond Earth

Although the glasses haven’t had much success…in being picked up by the International Space Station, the same cannot be said for the stunt itself.

News of the launch was well received on our social channels, generating more than 1.1 million reach, 41K interactions, as well as acquiring positive earned media coverage. It was also picked up by The Daily Express, Daily Star, PR Week and Bang Showbiz for an additional 40 million + impressions.

We’re over the moon* with this one.

Well, close-ish
